The temporary skip bins located at Cobargo Showground will be replaced with individual general waste and recycling bins at Narira Park.
The move is part of a transition to a kerbside bin collection service for more than 1100 rural households in the Bega Valley Shire.
“The skip bins have been a successful stop-gap for rural residents who once relied on Cobargo tip for disposal of household waste,” said Bega Valley Shire Council’s waste services manager, Alan Gundrill.
“Since the closure of Cobargo tip following last year’s Black Summer bushfires, we have provided the skip bin service at Cobargo Showground.
“Recognising the needs of the showground to operate upcoming events, we are relocating the waste collection service to the end of Park Street at Narira Park in Cobargo.”
Mr Gundrill said the move is a temporary measure and will be fully replaced with the rollout of council’s expanded bin bank and kerbside collection service during the coming months.
“We will move from a skip bin service to four 660-litre general waste bins collected weekly, and four recycling bins of the same size collected every fortnight from the new location,” he said.
“The change to smaller bins will reduce the likelihood of inappropriate use as we have seen at the showground, while providing a waste and recycling service for our rural customers.”
Earlier this year, Mr Gundrill said the misuse of the community waste service at the showground had left local residents feeling frustrated.
“It’s unfortunate and disappointing that some people are misusing this service by dumping large waste items such as furniture and old fencing,” he said at the time.
“Obviously these items have no place in a red bin, and we ask that people wrongfully dumping these items consider the residents who rely on this service for the disposal of their general waste.
“It is frustrating for residents needing a general waste service to find skips overfull with illegally dumped items.
“It doesn’t look good, and it is unfair.”
Council has expanded opening hours at Bermagui Waste Transfer Station, and it is now available as a waste and recycling drop-off point seven days a week.
