A 31-year-old man faced court on the weekend after he was charged with assaulting two female police officers in Wagga Wagga.
Shortly before 2 pm on Friday (16 May), two policewomen attached to the Southern Region Enforcement Squad attempted to stop a man allegedly riding without a helmet on Stillman Avenue, Kooringal.
Police will allege the man rode to Cutler Avenue, got off his bicycle and approached the officers.
The man allegedly stabbed a 27-year-old female constable in the arm with a screwdriver and caused cuts to her head and torso.
The two officers attempted to restrain the man, who struck the second female officer – a 34-year-old constable – in the face, causing her to fall and hit her head on the concrete driveway.
The man allegedly punched the first officer multiple times.
The man was arrested and taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated both officers before they were taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital.
The 27-year-old constable sustained a fractured finger, small puncture wound, bruising and cuts, while the 34-year-old constable was treated for a head injury.
They have since been discharged.
The 31-year-old man was charged with:
- Wounding a police officer executing duty
- Assaulting a police officer in the execution of duty causing actual bodily harm
- Assaulting a police officer in the execution of duty without actual bodily harm
- Being armed with the intention of committing an indictable offence
- Hindering or resisting a police officer in the execution of duty
- Riding a cycle without wearing an approved bicycle helmet/fitted/fastened
He was refused bail and appeared at Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.
