Safety and security for Snowy Mountains locals as well as tourists, one million of whom descend on the area over winter, will be supported by the opening of a new $14 million police station in Jindabyne.
The state-of-the-art facility was officially opened during a ceremony on Wednesday (14 February) and the Monaro Police District Commander, Superintendent John Klepczarek, said it would allow its officers to meet the policing needs of the local community and its visitors more effectively.
“We have more than one million tourists visit the snowfields over the snow season and with the popularity of Thredbo as a mountain biking destination throughout the year, this fit-for-purpose facility will help bolster our response capabilities, during all seasons,” he said.
“The Jindabyne station is an important base for search and rescue operations and will enable our officers to better respond not just to the snowfields, but better service the needs of the broader community, no matter the season.”
It has replaced the town’s former police station on Thredbo Terrace.
The construction of the new facility began in February 2022 and consists of four buildings: a police station, police accommodation, a boat shelter, and a secure garage for police vehicles and snowmobiles.
About 20 staff will be based at the facility and it includes a modern charge room and custody area, storage area for exhibits/investigation storage, a meal room and amenities.
It has staff accommodation, with 10 rooms with ensuites, while its parking will house operational vehicles, Skidoos, boat trailers and all-terrain vehicles.
Visiting officers head to the region during winter to provide support for the crowds heading to the snow.
“This new station will ensure NSW Police can continue to serve residents and visitors to Jindabyne and surrounding towns to drive down crime and keep the community safe,” NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb APM said.
“As part of the redevelopment, there are new modern accommodation facilities for additional officers and specialist units which bolster police numbers during the tourism months of winter and summer.”
Member for Monaro Steve Whan said the new police station was a significant investment in the region.
“We know that tourism has soared by 20 per cent in recent years and will continue to grow,” Mr Whan said.
“This police station gives our hardworking police the resources and facility they need to serve and protect our community.
“The new police station is already a landmark in Jindabyne. I’m glad to see it’s an alpine building for the alpine community.”
Late last year, three new accommodation towers, valued at $30 million and containing 180 rooms, were unveiled at Goulburn Police Academy.
The rooms, which are modern with their own ensuite and common areas on each floor, were part of a $60 million stimulus package to upgrade the academy’s facilities.
On Wednesday (14 February), Minister for Police Yasmin Catley said the Federal Government had been paying police recruits to study and “already we’ve seen a surge in applications to join the NSW Police”.
