Woman suffers minor burns during alleged arson attack, man charged

A man has been charged following a house fire near Tathra, which left a woman with minor burns to her face and hands.

At about 1:20 am on Sunday (17 July), emergency services were called to reports of a fire at a home on Ferntree Lane, Wallagoot.

The 54-year-old occupant had been awoken by a man outside her home, before it’s alleged he threw her to the ground as her house caught alight.

NSW Fire and Rescue extinguished the blaze, while paramedics treated the woman for minor burns to her face and hands.

The 69-year-old man accused of the attack allegedly fled the scene, but was arrested by police officers nearby.

He was taken to Bega Police Station before being transferred to South East Regional Hospital in Bega under police guard, with burns to his forehead. He’s since been transferred to Canberra Hospital for further treatment.

The Wallagoot man has been charged with destroy or damage property, destroy/damage property with intent to endanger life – serious indictable offence, and common assault.

He was formally refused bail in Batemans Bay Local Court yesterday (Monday, 18 July). He’s next expected to appear in court on 13 September.
