A woman has died following a two-vehicle crash in the state’s south.
A NSW Police spokesperson said that just before 1:45 pm on Anzac Day (25 April), emergency services were called to the intersection of Hume Highway and Yass Valley Way, at Manton (about 10 kilometres north of Yass), amid reports of a two-vehicle crash.
Officers from The Hume Police District attended and found a Mazda sedan had collided head-on with a Ford station wagon, the spokesperson said.
NSW Ambulance paramedics attended and treated the driver of the Mazda (a 37-year-old man) for injuries to his chest and pelvis.
He was taken to Canberra hospital in a critical condition.
A woman in her 30s, who was a passenger in the Mazda, was treated at the scene. She was also airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a critical condition.
A second passenger, a 70-year-old man, was treated by paramedics before being taken to Canberra Hospital.
The spokesperson said he was in a serious condition.
A third passenger, a 69-year-old woman, died at the scene.
The driver of the Ford was a 32-year-old woman.
She sustained minor injuries and was taken to Canberra Hospital for treatment.
A crime scene has been established and will be examined by officers from the Southern Crash Investigation Unit.
According to Live Traffic NSW, motorists are being asked to avoid that section of the Hume Highway and use extra caution.
As of 6 pm, the highway is closed in a southbound direction and one of two northbound lanes are closed.
“There is no access to the Hume Hwy from Yass Valley Way, use Barton Hwy instead,” their alert recommends.
“Ongoing police investigations are expected to take some time.”
For those travelling in the area, people are asked to use an alternative route – that of Yass Valley Way, the Barton Highway, and joining the Hume Highway.
The alert states this is expected to add less than 10 minutes to people’s journeys.
“Vehicles larger than B-doubles should find somewhere convenient to park up.”
Officers from The Hume Police District will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.
As inquiries continue, police are asking anyone with information about the matter (who has any relevant dashcam or mobile phone footage) to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
