Two weeks after a fire engulfed six trucks at a Goulburn rest stop, a driver has been charged.

Emergency services were called on 30 June to the Windmills Rest Area parking area, on the northbound side of the Hume Highway at Breadalbane, about 32 km south-west of Goulburn.

The crash had occurred about 5 am, leaving the highway shut in both directions for much of the day.

A NSW Police spokesperson said a 28-year-old man was charged on Tuesday (14 July).

“Initial investigations suggest two trucks collided and became alight, before the fire spread to four other trucks that were parked at the rest bay nearby,” the spokesperson said.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated six male drivers for minor injuries at the scene. Two drivers, aged 23 and 28, were taken to Goulburn Hospital for mandatory testing.

Speaking to the media following the incident in June, a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said the trucks were carrying a variety of chemicals, including eight tonnes of butane cans, resin and alcohol. All six trucks were destroyed.

Officers attached to the Hume Police District, as well as the Crash Investigation Unit, started an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Following their inquiries, a 28-year-old man was served a Future Court Attendance Notice on Tuesday (14 July), charged with negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm).

He is scheduled to appear before Yass Local Court on 27 August.
