Two truck drivers have escaped without injury after a fiery crash on the Hume Highway near Yass overnight.
Emergency services were called shortly before 9 pm on Tuesday (21 April) to a section of highway about 5 km west of Yass Valley Way, following reports that two semi-trailers had collided.
One truck was carrying polythene pipe, while the other was loaded with plasterboard.
Officers from the NSW Police Force attached to the Hume Police District arrived to find both trucks on fire.
The drivers – aged 36 and 61 – managed to free themselves from their vehicles before the flames took hold. Neither man was injured.
Fire crews from Fire and Rescue NSW and the NSW Rural Fire Service worked to extinguish the blaze, deploying five appliances, including a tanker and rescue pumper, at the scene. The blaze was put out by about 10 pm.
Between 600 and 700 litres of diesel were spilled onto the road, which required sand to be brought in to soak it up.
The southbound lanes of the highway remain closed between Yass Valley Way and the Barton Highway as salvage operations continue. Motorists are being urged to avoid the area, with delays expected for several more hours.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is now underway.
Anyone with information, including dashcam footage, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
