A new solar-powered water fill station was installed in June at South Pambula to ensure residents are better connected to water in times of drought or bushfires.
It was the combination of last year’s drought and the Black Summer bushfires which highlighted a need for better water access in the region.
The water fill station is located on Redfern Close which is located near many rural properties.
Bega Valley Shire Council’s Water and Sewerage Services Manager Chris Best said the new fill station brings a low-cost solution to delivering improved water security to an agricultural, industrial and residential area bordering large areas of forest.
He said the events of the 2019-2020 summer had made it particularly evident how important it is for rural residents to be close to an affordable source of water.

“Our network of water fill stations add to the numerous services we provide, ensuring we are as prepared as can be for drier times ahead.
“Having a new fill station close to many rural properties makes it easier for water cartage suppliers to service this area with reduced overheads, and for residents to top-up supplies when needed.
“Water fill stations are there for commercial and residential use with free and paid options available to suit different needs,” Mr Best said.
The station is able to deliver both a free and paid option.
Mr Best explained that the free option is well suited for campervans and recreational vehicles or anyone wanting to top-up a small drinking water tank as it delivers up to 200 litres of water in about six minutes via a standard garden hose fitting.
In terms of the paid option, about 1000 litres in less than five minutes can be delivered via a 50mm or 80mm outlet.
To access this option, customers will need to request a key available from the council office in Bega and will then be billed quarterly at $3.30 per thousand litres.
“Water from all of our fill stations across the shire is treated and safe to drink. All you need is your own hose and connection, plus as many containers as you need,” Mr Best said.
Other council water fill stations are located at Bermagui, Cobargo-Quaama, Bega, Tathra, Bemboka, Candelo, Merimbula and Eden.
