Snowy Monaro Regional Council started to blow smoke into the criss-cross of sewer pipes in and around Bombala today – July 22.

The smoke testing of the sewer network is being done by Interflow and takes in connections throughout the township.

Non-toxic smoke is injected into the sewer system to identify potential sources of stormwater infiltration – where there is smoke further investigation will take place.

These points may be, household roofs and downpipes, street stormwater drains or even cracks in pipes leaching from the ground.

Stormwater that enters the sewer network during rain events causes a significant increase in operational costs and limits Council’s ability to treat sewage effectively.

Residents can expect to receive notification and further information via a letterbox drop as the works progress between now and August 9. The project should not have any impact on resident’s use of the sewer at any time.

Enquires can be directed to Council’s Capital Works Engineer – Water and Wastewater, John Booker on 1300 345 345.
