Snowy Monaro Regional Council (SMRC) has confirmed an incident occurred at the Yallambee Lodge aged care facility in Cooma on Wednesday 17 May, involving an elderly woman and police.

Council has advised it is supporting its staff, residents, and families during this difficult time.

Late on 17 May, police advised a critical incident investigation had been launched after an elderly woman sustained injuries during an interaction with police at an aged care facility in the state’s south.

The 95-year-old woman was taken to Cooma District Hospital, where her condition is being monitored.

A critical incident team is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

That investigation will be subject to independent review.

No further comment about the incident is available at the current time due to the ongoing investigation, and out of respect for the privacy of those involved.

Yallambee Lodge is a council owned and operated aged care facility which was built and opened in 1995.

It is a 40-bed aged care facility with 38 permanent beds and two respite beds.

The facility was largely funded with community donations, including a large bequest.

It has been the subject of ongoing community concern as SMRC has investigated its future, with council looking to cease operating the lodge and find another provider with experience in the aged care sector.

An extension to the lodge, specifically for dementia residents, has been planned with an adjacent former service station demolished and the site rehabilitated to allow for the site expansion.

Council also operates the Snowy River Hostel in Berridale, another aged care facility built mainly through community contributions.
