NSW Police have recovered seven more heavy vehicle trailers and a prime mover as part of an investigation that was sparked when livestock trailers were stolen from Cooma earlier in 2021.

The two trailers disappeared from a property on Saleyards Road in Cooma in July and 29-year-old Canberra man Glen John Smith was arrested when they were found on the Monaro Highway at Michelago.

“He was pursued on foot through several paddocks before running into a nearby dam,” police alleged at the time.

Then in August, police searched a property at Mulloon, about 20km east of Bungendore, finding 17 vehicles, a prime mover trailer, a boat, caravan, bobcat, electric bicycle and two trailers, all of which they alleged had been stolen.

They arrested a 50-year-old man at the property.

On 15 September, 2021, NSW Police went to a rural property at Manar, between Bungendore and Braidwood, and found three heavy vehicle trailers allegedly stolen from two transport businesses in Goulburn in early July 2021.

The next day, on 16 September, 2021, police went to another property in Manar and discovered four additional heavy vehicle trailers as well as a prime mover. These were allegedly stolen from three businesses in Fyshwick, Queanbeyan and Goulburn in early July 2021.

“The total value of the recovered stolen property is estimated to be over $1 million,” said NSW Police.

Mr Smith and the 50-year-old man have been charged over their alleged roles, with the latter appearing in Queanbeyan Local Court on 5 October 2021.

On Wednesday (22 September), Mr Smith appeared before the Cooma Local Court facing charges that included stealing a motor vehicle and driving while never holding a licence.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell refused bail and adjourned the case to the Queanbeyan court on 27 September.
