Two people have been arrested after allegedly using a drone to try to smuggle contraband into Cooma prison.

A NSW Police spokesperson said that at about 1:10 pm on Friday (25 September), officers attached to Monaro Police District were notified that a drone was allegedly flying in prohibited airspace above a correctional facility in Cooma.

Following inquiries, police went to a nearby park on Barrack Street, where they located and spoke with two men, aged 31 and 38.

During a search of the men and a nearby vehicle, officers allegedly located a drone box and controller, mobile phones and SIM cards.

Following their inquiries, officers allegedly located and seized a drone with an attached package from a nearby creek.

During a search of the package, police allegedly located and seized tobacco, prohibited drugs, a mobile phone and several other items.

Police said they seized the items for forensic examination.

The two men were arrested and taken to Cooma police station where they were both charged with operating a remotely piloted aircraft within prohibited airspace, unlawfully delivering or attempting to deliver anything to an inmate, and supplying cannabis (an amount over indictable and less than commercial quantity).

They were both refused bail and appeared before Bail Division Court 3 on Saturday (26 September).
