As NSW celebrates “freedom day”, health authorities have recorded only a handful of new COVID-19 cases in southern NSW.

The easing of restrictions at 70 per cent full vaccination has seen businesses across the state welcoming back vaccinated patrons, with some opening as early as 12:01 am.

“I see it as a day of freedom; it is a freedom day,” Premier Dominic Perrottet said, adding that reopening needs to be “done in a measured and safe way.”

He stressed that he expected case numbers and hospitalisations to increase in the state with increased interaction among residents.

But it was more good news in the Southern NSW Local Health District (SNSWLHD), with just six new COVID-19 cases reported in the 24 hours to 8 pm yesterday – however, only one was linked to a known case.

This brings the total cases in SNSWLHD to 379 since the start of the current outbreak in June.

Of the six new cases:

  • One new case is in Queanbeyan and is under investigation;
  • One new case is in Goulburn and is under investigation;
  • Two new cases are in the Snowy Monaro region. One is linked to known cases. One case is in Jindabyne and one is in Crackenback;
  • One new case is in Bega and is under investigation;
  • One new case is in Batemans Bay and is under investigation.

SNSWLHD has been notified of new venues of concern associated with COVID-19 cases. Anyone who visited one of these venues at the times listed is a casual contact and must immediately get tested and isolate until a negative result is received.

If additional venues are identified through further contact tracing, these will be announced as soon as they are known.

There has been just one new confirmed case of COVID-19 in the Murrumbidgee Local Health District to 8 pm last night. The case is a resident of the Edward River LGA.

MLHD has confirmed there has also been a second case of COVID-19 in the Edward River LGA since 8 pm. This case will be included in tomorrow’s numbers.

Both cases are linked to previous cases at the Deniliquin Hospital and have been in isolation during their infectious period. The affected ward has undergone a deep clean and presenting for care at the Deniliquin Hospital poses no risk to patients.

There have been 45 cases reported in the MLHD since the start of the current outbreak and one death, comprising 25 cases in the Hilltops LGA, nine in Albury LGA, eight in Edward River LGA, two in Wagga Wagga LGA, one in Griffith LGA and one in Federation LGA.

There has been one new venue of concern associated with known cases. Anyone who attended Wagga Wagga Fruit Supply in Forsyth Street, Wagga Wagga between 9:15 am and 10 am on Wednesday 6 October is considered a casual contact.

Casual contacts are asked to seek a COVID test and isolate until they receive a negative result.

COVID-19 has been detected in sewerage in Albury, Wagga Wagga and West Wyalong and there are renewed calls for the community to come forward for testing.

NSW recorded 498 new cases of COVID-19 today and, sadly, eight deaths.
