The Nethercote Produce Market on the NSW South Coast is set to return on Saturday, 23 January, offering a range of fresh fruit and vegetables to the community, and enabling market growers to sell their produce.

The market will open at 8 am and there are new COVID-19 safety measures in place.

Market organiser Lis Shelley said the last time the markets were run was in January 2020, during the Black Summer bushfires.

“We managed to run it in January last year despite the fires,” she said. “We thought, ‘The community needs this,’ but COVID-19 put a kibosh on the rest of the markets for the year.

“I know we’ll probably have as many stallholders as we usually have, and we’re able to spread out a bit more because of the extension to the hall.

“All our regulars will be there – there’s one lady selling locally grown garlic, and all the fruit and veggies are local. I think we go as far north as Tilba with the cheese, and meat is all grown locally in Pambula. All the produce is sourced from within a 100km radius.

“Our jam queens, Ena and Beth, will be there. They’ve been making jam for a long time and it’s very popular, and Sprout Eden will be there with their bread and other produce.”

The produce at the market is from home gardeners and farmers, and the not-for-profit market donates proceeds of the event, after costs, to food-related projects in the community.

“Any of the surplus from the market growers’ stall, and the morning tea and hamper raffle, goes to a local food-related organisation, such as a school garden or some kind of food growing project,” said Ms Shelley.

Homegrown produce can be sold through the market’s Growers Stall, and can be dropped off at Nethercote Hall between 3 pm and 4 pm on the Friday before the market, or at 8 am on market day.

The market in the Nethercote Valley – 10km from Eden and 12km from Pambula – opens at 8 am and closes at 12 pm. It will feature entertainment from the Stage Dwellers.

Nethercote Produce Market is run on a volunteer basis, and anyone who would like to volunteer can call 0400 341 282.
