The adult charged after a nine-year-old boy was accidentally shot and died on a rural property near Goulburn last year has been handed a community-based sentence.
NSW Police said emergency services were called to the property in Windellama, a locality about 40 km south of Goulburn, on 13 April 2025.
“On arrival, officers attached to the Hume Police District were told a nine-year-old boy had been injured after the unintentional discharge of a firearm,” a police spokesperson said at the time.
The boy was treated for serious neck injuries but he died at the scene.
Police investigated the incident under Strike Force Dalzeill. As a result, a 14-year-old boy and a then-33-year-old man were both arrested and taken to the Goulburn Police Station.
The teen was charged with possessing an unauthorised firearm and scheduled to face a Children’s Court.
The man, who is now in his mid-30s but is not named to avoid identifying the two boys involved, was ultimately handed three charges.
He faced the Goulburn Local Court on 18 March where he was convicted of allowing an unauthorised person to possess a firearm and not keeping a firearm safely.
He was sentenced to a nine-month community corrections order, a type of order that requires him to be of good behaviour in the community.
In addition, the man was found guilty of another charge of allowing an unauthorised person to possess a firearm, but Magistrate Timothy Khoo dismissed this charge without proceeding to a conviction.
