The Canberra man accused of killing a woman in a fatal car crash earlier this month has been named and ordered to be taken to NSW to face a charge over her death.

Samantha Holmes, a 36-year-old from Candelo in the Bega Valley, was driving on the Monaro Highway near Michelago in the early hours of 1 March when she was killed in a crash with another car.

It is alleged that Waqas Haider was driving the second vehicle, and police were originally investigating whether the collision was an “intentional act”.

Mr Haider, who is from the ACT suburb of Charnwood, was found in a nearby paddock later that morning before he was taken to the Canberra Hospital with a suspected broken ankle.

It was originally expected that he would be charged with dangerous driving occasioning death.

He was taken for a mental health assessment when he first faced the ACT Magistrates Court and remained in a Canberra hospital for about three weeks before he returned to court on Tuesday (24 March).

Prosecutor Marina Lucero told the court the 40-year-old had been diagnosed with an unspecified mental health disorder. She applied for his extradition from the ACT to NSW.

Magistrate Ian Temby made the order, saying Mr Haider was to be taken to Queanbeyan Local Court as soon as practicable.

He is expected to face court this week.
