Canberra fans of country bakery Little Sutton Bakehouse will be pleased to hear that the drive just got a whole lot shorter, as the popular regional bakery announces a new site in Deakin.

Taking over the site formerly home to Locale Pizzeria, Little Sutton Deakin will feature the same artisan breads and pastries that have made it such a beloved destination.

Owners Omar Muscat and Daniel Sparrow said that they wanted to make their products more accessible to Canberrans, and are keen to complement the businesses already in Deakin.

“The Deakin Shops have always been a place for the community to connect. We see Little Sutton Deakin as building on that, creating a hospitality hub where great food, great coffee and genuine connection come together,” said Omar.

“It’s about giving people more reasons to stay a little longer and making the precinct an even more vibrant destination.”

The satellite Deakin location will receive daily deliveries from the Sutton flagship store: a drive the team are calling Dough on the Daily.

Their freshly baked olive oil focaccia will be the base for house-made sandwiches, which will be available in addition to the core range of sourdough, gourmet pies, buttery croissants and a range of country-style cakes.

The team attributes much of the flaky, buttery success of their pastries to their collaboration with Pepe Saya butter, a fully Australian cultured butter brand. The new store will feature a retail shelf stocked with Pepe Saya products, including cultured butter, milk and lemon curd.

Once the weather warms up, Little Sutton will start a series of pizza nights. Featuring a sourdough base, the Sutton pizza nights have become a favourite community occasion, and will go a long way to fill the Locale-shaped hole in the hearts (and stomachs) of Deakin locals.

For Omar and Daniel, their bakery is more than just a place to grab a loaf: it’s a third space.

“Together, we want to create a place where people can grab their morning coffee, meet friends for lunch, pick up fresh bread on the way home, or simply spend time together.”

And of course, the Sutton Bakehouse will still be operating as per usual for those outside city limits or heading out for a country drive.

The opening of Little Sutton Deakin is slated for early September. Little Sutton Deakin will be located at Shop 5 Hopetoun Circuit, Deakin. Follow them on Facebook or Instagram to find out more.
