The Hilton hotel group is looking to establish a presence in Canberra with an unsolicited proposal to build a five-star complex in the national capital.

The bid, which was lodged in May but only just made public, comes from the Hilton Canberra WTTC Consortium, consisting of Sydney-based M20 Pty Ltd and Ledrae Hotels Pty Ltd, and Hilton Hotels of Australia Pty Ltd.

According to the Chief Minister, Treasury and Economic Development Directorate website, the consortium proposes the construction and operation of a World Trade Technology Centre to host trade and technology firms and the Hilton Canberra, a five-star, full-service hotel.

The hotel would boast signature restaurants, bars, a health club, swimming pools, and grand ballroom; as well as a hotel school, a child care centre and a nursing academy.

A CMTEDD statement said the unsolicited proposal was being considered by the Unsolicited Proposals Steering Committee, made of up Senior Executives from the ACT Public Service.

The proponent had presented its proposal to the Committee but government had not made a decision either to progress or not progress with the proposal at this stage.

It said more information would be provided in the coming months.

A Hilton spokesperson said if the proposal proceeded Ledrae Hotels Pty Ltd would be the developer, with Hilton entering into a management agreement. But no further information could be released.

Ledrae is developing the 27-floor, 245-room Hilton Parramatta in Sydney which is due to open in 2022, after signing a management deal with Hilton last October.

Canberra has three five-star hotels – the Hyatt in Yarralumla, Ovolo Nishi in NewActon, and Hotel Realm in Barton – with Geocon proposing a five-star development for Garema Place in the city.
