Kangaroo Valley’s Hampden Bridge will be closed to all traffic from Monday (25 May) for four nights for ongoing repair work.

The work will replace damaged elements of the timber truss along the top of the bridge.

The bridge will be closed to motorists between 7 pm and 5 am from Monday to Thursday 28 May, weather permitting.

During closures, detours will be in place via the Illawarra Highway at Macquarie Pass and the Princes Highway, adding up to 90 minutes to travel times. There will be no night closures on Macquarie Pass during this night work.

Pedestrians will be able to cross the bridge during work under the guidance of traffic control.

Heavy vehicles have been banned from using the 1898 bridge since May 2025 to relieve pressure on the structure.

Transport for NSW (TfNSW) said at the time that extensive monitoring and testing of the historic bridge had revealed “significant wear and tear getting harder to predict”.

A Transport spokesperson said that during the closures, a soft closure would be set up on Moss Vale Road at a safe turnaround point on both sides of Hampden Bridge about 15 minutes before the bridge was closed.

“This aims to minimise the impact on motorists who may not be aware of the bridge closure. Local access will be maintained through the soft closure points,” the spokesperson said.

“Transport for NSW is working with emergency services to ensure additional resources are in place so both sides of Hampden Bridge can be accessed should there be an emergency during the closures.”

Night work will also be carried out on Sunday 24 and Friday 29 May from 7 pm to 5 am, weather permitting, but the bridge will remain open with stop/slow traffic control in place.

From Monday 1 June, work will continue from 7 am to 6 pm on weekdays, weather permitting.

During daytime work, the bridge will remain open to traffic under stop/slow traffic control and with a reduced speed limit of 10 km/h for trucks and buses.
