The ‘world as we know it’ is no longer, and continues to morph every day.

With many of us self-isolating due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and recent announcements by Federal and State Governments enforcing social distancing, many of our local eateries have closed their doors indefinitely.

However, some businesses are thinking outside the box. Hoping to maintain staff and trade, and nourish their communities, some of our favourite South Coast cafes and restaurants are offering takeaway meals and drinks which can be ordered and paid for online. Others are going further and will deliver meals right to your door.

Here is a selection of what’s on offer throughout the South Coast.

Note: In this rapidly changing environment, it’s important to check directly with businesses that they are still trading.

Order takeaway:

Feel like a burger around Merimbula? Dulcies Cottage is offering its menu to takeaway, so think milk buns, beef burgers and all delicious accoutrements. Hungry’s is also offering takeaway during business hours, and you can order take-home packs, meals and coffee from Cranky Cafe. Bar Beach Kiosk will be open this week, but is closing ‘for the season’ soon.

Infuse of Tura Beach is offering takeaway – the crew make a mean Vietnamese pho, plus tasty nori rolls and great coffee.

Candelo General Store and Cafe is operating as a takeaway store, with the highly recommended $12 bacon and egg roll on offer as well as a full menu. Further up the hills, Kettle and Seed in Cooma is all go for food ‘to go’.

In Bega, Cafe Evolve is offering takeaway from its menu and still serving coffee, while also attempting to limit the extraordinary waste generated by takeaway service. Red Cafe is also open for take away and appreciates you bringing your own containers (even a little discount).

The lovely people at Eurolicious in Bermagui have set up a blackboard menu, available until 1.30 pm, which you can check out on the cafe and bistro’s Instagram.

Also in Bermagui, the gorgeous flavours of Bermagui Gelati Clinic are ready to be taken home for those craving sweet relief. Cream Patisserie has coffee, baked delights and other newly added pantry items all made in-house for you to enjoy at home.

The Mossy Café at Mossy Point says, “The Mossy loves a challenge and we’re 100 per cent up to it. Our full menu is available for takeaway and it can be viewed on our website. We love our little community and we want to do everything we can to make your lives as easy and happy as possible.”

Single Fin in Broulee has been trialling a new takeaway window and encourages people to tap and pay.

The Sandbar restaurant in Batemans Bay is adapting its refined degustation menu to a delicious, hearty take-home selection. Offering hot mains that come with three creative side dishes, chef David Tinker is working hard in his kitchen and “will keep going as long as possible”.

The Boatshed in the Batemans Bay is also creating great family takeaway, and Nourish on North will prepare your phone orders from 8 am to 1.30 pm.

Takeaway and home delivery:

Bronnie Pividori of Blend in Tathra is going all out with a home delivery service for her community. “We’ve got your caffeine needs covered among other delicious treats. Also Tathra sourdough bread is baked daily.” Takeaway and car park pick up also available – order on their website.

Toast of Pambula has upped the ante by delivering burritos and beers, also utilising an app, Bopple, that provides an easy way to order with minimal contact. “We are still here. Still going strong, but things may change.” We’ve teamed up with Longstocking Brewery and Capital Brewing brews and have our ready to go margarita jars, available with your home delivered burritos from 6 til 8.30pm”. Keep up to date on the cafe’s Facebook page.

Bega Thai Restaurant is offering a home delivery service in the Bega area, with a minimum spend of $30 plus delivery fee. The restaurant also provides a handy lunchtime service, from 11 am to 2 pm Monday to Saturday, and dinner daily (5 pm to 8 pm).

A Pinch of Yum, a local caterer with a reputation for deliciousness, is offering great meals – including sumptuous dumplings – for home delivery from Eden to Tura Beach.

Hannah Abraham from Il Passaggio Italian restaurant in Bermagui says she is offering takeaway meals, with home delivery, but understands that “with many people out of work, this might be more of a luxury than a necessity”. She will also be opening her in-store providore on Mondays and Tuesdays from 12 pm-2 pm. Eastwoods also in Bermi are starting take away meals and delivery this week.

Further north in Narooma, Whale Restaurant is taking the plunge and offering pick up and home delivery meals. They’ll be keeping people up to date on their socials.

Oysters:

Tathra Oysters is offering a ‘deliver to your car’ service. You can call or text your order and deliciousness will be delivered to your vehicle, along with EFTPOS tapping facilities. They also offer overnight delivery to major cities, as does Broadwater Oysters, of Pambula. Wheelers Oysters are open for farm gate pick up and are also delivering from Eden to Tura.

Wholefoods and ingredients:

If you want to avoid supermarkets and go for the wholefoods approach with a more organic selection, don’t forget our local wholefood outlets. Some are restricting hours and the amount of certain foods people can purchase, however Gulaga Organics in Bermagui, Pambula Wholefoods and Candelo Bulk Wholefoods Cooperative of Bega are taking phone and email orders for pick up.

Sourdough bread, kombucha and coffee:

Nicky and Chris of Faraway Farm are busy filling their days making loads of ferments to get out to the community “to help everyone build up strong immune systems.” They’re offering online sales of kombucha, krauts, treats and more, with home deliveries to the folks of Bega Valley.

Wheatley Lane Bread of Candelo, and Honorbread in Bermagui, will continue baking and delivering for as long as possible. Honorbread has set up an online shop for pick-up from their store: “We are carefully packaging your bread. No coffee and pastries for now, but [we have] ‘mummas’ [sic] and hot cross buns.”

Wild Rye’s of Pambula has morphed its bakery into a takeaway shop. Its coffee outlet, The Roastery is open for takeaway service. Beans are also available to order online here.

Montague Coffee is still able to post orders via their website. For orders in Narooma to Dalmeny, “we may do delivery of 500g or 1kg coffee to front door; check with us at the time”.

Alfresco Coffee Roasters has kept its ‘hole in the wall’ open and is pumping out goods for wholesalers and online orders.

Craft beer and spirits:

Though their cellar door is closed, award-winning local gin from North of Eden distillers is available to online subscribers.

Longstocking Brewery of Pambula is open for takeaway from 11 am to 4 pm Wednesday to Saturday. And wait for it… the craft brewers are also offering home delivery from South Pambula to Tura Beach. Longstocking is promising “one hell of a brewery party when this nightmare is over…”

If we’ve missed your favourite eatery or producer, check in with their socials to see if they’re open and what they are offering. If local eateries are adapting in an effort to stay trading, keep staff and support their communities, we’re all for that!

The list of cafes and eateries closing their doors is growing each day. Check their websites or respective Facebook and Instagram pages for details.
