Does the idea of wildflowers, clear running rivers, crisp mountain air and a multitude of activities appeal to you?

When the snow melts and the warmer weather arrives, many people head for the beaches but there is a cooler – or make that alpine – wonderland to explore at Kosciuszko National Park less than three hours’ drive from Canberra.

If you’re looking for a getaway, how about exploring the Thredbo Valley Track by mountain bike or lacing up your boots and trying the Summit walk with its glorious views from Australia’s highest peak.

There’s a host of lodges, guest houses and huts available to stay in. Until December 21, you can also stay for three nights while only paying for two at a range of places.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service has put together a list of their top five picks for a stay in the Snowies this season. Take a look at the places below and click on the links for details and prices.

Numbananga Lodge

One of the hidden secrets of the Snowies is the recently opened Numbananga Lodge – a beautifully refurbished, self-contained lodge nestled in sub-alpine woodland, in the heart of Smiggin Holes. In spring and summer, the lodge makes a perfect base to explore the walks, bike rides and fishing spots between Jindabyne and Charlotte Pass. The balcony and barbecue make a great combo to enjoy the spectacular sunset views from the lodge across Smiggin Holes, Pipers Creek and the Perisher Ranges (the stay 3 pay 2 offer does not apply at the lodge).

Creel Lodge

This stay mixes indulgence with activity. Located in a remote alpine setting, but near the hustle and bustle of Perisher, Creel Lodge is an ideal base from which to enjoy walks, rides, fishing, paddling and boating. Enjoy the luxury of a mountain chalet, complete with sweeping views over beautiful Lake Jindabyne. The lodge sleeps up to eight people, making it an ideal getaway for families or groups of friends seeking a balanced mix of action and relaxation.

Yarrangobilly Caves House

If being away from the crowds in a tranquil setting is the vibe you’re going for, and renting an entire wing of a heritage-listed house sounds just deluxe enough, consider the award-winning Yarrangobilly Caves House 1901 – East and West wings. The cosy restored house is perfectly located amidst tall, lush forestry, with two incredible natural wonders close by – the amazing Yarrangobilly Caves, and the beautiful, naturally-heated thermal swimming pool.

Lyrebird Cottage

This secluded, spacious cottage is tucked away in a particularly remote and lush part of Yarrangobilly Valley. If you prefer seeing stars over people, this is the place for you. The luxury eco-cottage is close to the incredible Yarrangobilly caves and naturally-heated thermal pool, and is also near the ‘must-see’ plains and mountains of northern Kosciuszko. You will find yourself ensconced in nature and able to enjoy nature walks, scenic views and your friendly wildlife neighbours.

Wolgal Hut

Feeling a little retro? Always wanted to stay in a groovy ‘60s themed ski lodge? Well, Wolgal Hut has the décor down-pat. This is the place to go to get away from it all and enjoy quality time in the pristine sub-alpine region. Mount Selwyn, bushwalks, fishing, birdwatching and the historic Kiandra district are all at your doorstep to explore if the mood strikes, or stay in the cosy cabin and play some Twister.
