A nearly $4 million road upgrade is coming to the Princes Highway to keep up with the growing volume of traffic.

It will deliver an additional 3.5-metre wide southbound overtaking lane to improve network efficiency through Batemans Bay, linking with the existing dual southbound lanes to the north and south of the project area.

A new 2.5-metre-wide shared user path will also be built alongside the new lane, which will provide the missing link between existing footpaths.

The project will also improve connections for pedestrians and cyclists moving around the area.

Line marking will be reinstated, a retaining wall installed and roadside drainage improved.

Member for Bega Doctor Michael Holland welcomed the start of the $3.78 million works.

“I’ve heard directly from locals about the pressure on this section of the Princes Highway, particularly during peak periods, and the need to make it safer for everyone who uses it.

“This upgrade will make a real difference – improving traffic flow for drivers while also creating safer, more connected pathways for pedestrians and cyclists.”

It means conditions will change for the project area – spanning the highway between Guy Street and the Old Princes Highway – from this month.

This project is part of the NSW Government’s Princes Highway upgrades program.

Transport for NSW’s website states the $60 million program covers the Nowra bypass area to Moruya.

According to an April community update, the works will start from Monday (20 April) and are expected to last until late August, weather permitting.

On weekdays, workers will be on scene between 7 am and 5 pm.

Motorists are advised that stop/slow traffic control will be in place, with the Old Princes Highway to be used “intermittently” as a detour if needed.

The southbound lane of the Princes Highway between Guy Street and the Old Princes Highway will be closed while the work is ongoing.

“Please allow up to five minutes’ additional travel time, drive to the conditions and follow the direction of signs and traffic control,” the update states.

Dr Holland said the project would ensure the road network could deal with growing demand.

“Batemans Bay is growing and it’s a key gateway for visitors to the Far South Coast, so it’s important our infrastructure keeps pace.

“I thank the community for their patience during these works and look forward to seeing these practical improvements in place.”
