This historic weatherboard cottage in Bega has enough charm to attract buyers from Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra. The listing agent, Greg Coman, would not be surprised if the buyer came from interstate.

If ever the Bega Valley featured in an episode of Escape from the City, then this 1898 weatherboard cottage with climbing roses and iron roof would be the perfect home. Suddenly, you experience a sense of Bega’s history as you discover the enchantment of 6 Bega Street, Bega.

The charm begins at this colourful doorway.

“It has a little bit of everything. It is charming, quiet, in a good location on the edge of town, with many walking tracks, close to the Bega River,” Mr Coman, of Elders Real Estate, Tathra, says.

“It has a lot of character, it is a great old home, still in such good condition.”

Lime trees are among the native plants found on the property.

Natural light floods the kitchen space – a great way to start the day!

Inside, a light-filled dining room adjoins the spacious kitchen with island bench and provides an inviting view and direct access to the rear garden.

An efficient wood fireplace warms the entire main cottage.

The home has 2kw solar panels and solar hot water.

A well-designed extension offers another entire living area and possible workspace.

All bedrooms are large; most with built-in wardrobes. The fourth in the extension is extra large, with a second bathroom and a separate office or possible fifth bedroom. This would be ideal as a parents’ retreat, or a teenager’s room. “You could even run a childcare program out of there,” Mr Coman says, emphasising its space. It would be ideal for guest accommodation too.

Rooms are spacious.

“The vendors have created a remarkable garden. Designed as an organic food forest the rambling garden provides an abundance of food and natural beauty. With restful nooks and crannies everywhere, it is uniquely beautiful throughout the entire year”.

A variety of citrus and other fruit trees can be found along with various berries, heritage roses, herbs and a frog pond. Soft paths meander through the garden on this 531 square metre block.

The vendors are now empty nesters, ready to move on, Mr Coman says.

One could almost imagine cosying up by the fireplace, hot coffee/tea in one hand and a great book in the other.

Bega is just a short drive from picturesque Tathra and many pristine beaches. Tourism is flourishing. Dairy farms are the backbone of the Bega Valley with Bega Cheese as one of the major employers. The newly built regional hospital also brings employment opportunities.

Listed with Greg Coman of Elders, Tathra, 6 Bega Street, Bega is for sale by private treaty for $525,000.
