Love Island Australia’s inaugural winner, Grant Crapp, says he was “shocked” to hear his brother would appear on the reality television show this season.

The younger of the two brothers, Brent Crapp didn’t reveal the news to Grant until after he’d auditioned.

“When he told me he was going on I was shocked,” says Grant. “I had no idea. But I wished him good luck. It’s a good avenue to build your profile and meet new people.”

But Grant admits his former appearance on the Nine Network show probably helped his brother secure a spot on the island.

He also says his brother, a Canberra recruitment consultant, didn’t apply to meet just anyone.

“I think he genuinely wants to find love,” says Grant. “He’s never had a proper girlfriend in his life.”

As for who that someone might be, it’s obvious to Grant and the show’s viewers that Brent has his eye on 25-year-old Gold Coast warehouse worker Zoe, which may not be the best choice.

“I think Zoe might take him for a ride,” says Grant.

But as one of five new intruders to enter ‘Casa Amor’, Brent will no doubt have the pick of multiple women who have been on the island for the past 14 episodes.

“Hopefully, the right girl is on there, otherwise I’ll go after them and make sure they don’t break his heart!” says Grant with a cheeky laugh.

Grant says Brent spent the months leading up to the show training hard in the gym in Canberra, where he works in recruitment.

“Your looks are really important going into the show because that’s what you’re first judged on,” says Grant. “Then if they like you, you’ve just got to be able to talk to them.”

Grant helped Brent with his training and gave him advice before entering the island.

“I told him just to have fun and embrace it because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and if you take it too seriously, it takes the enjoyment out of it,” he says.

Grant left Love Island in 2018 with Tayla Damir, but experienced backlash on social media when he rekindled his romance with former girlfriend Lucy Cartwright.

Grant and Lucy are still going strong and live together on the NSW South Coast with their daughter, Charli.

Grant says he thought Brent handled himself well in the first episode, which aired on Wednesday, 3 November, especially when confronted about his brother’s past.

Instead of playing into the drama, Brent shrugged off the situation and said he is on the island to pursue his own journey.

“Brent is different to me,” says Grant. “He’s shy to begin with, but once he’s comfortable, he’s a larrikin. He makes everyone laugh.”

The family will be watching and can’t wait to catch up with Brent when he gets off the show.

Grant says it’s been months since Brent saw Charli, who was born in April 2021, because of COVID-19 restrictions.

“All I hope is he has a good time and enjoys it and gets what he wants out of the show,” says Grant.

“Even if he doesn’t make it past this week, at least he gave it a go.”
