A mid-week boating trip has turned to tragedy on the NSW South Coast, with one man dead after a boat capsized at Moruya on Wednesday, 9 February.

Emergency services were called to North Head, Moruya, just before 11 am following reports a boat had capsized.

Police were told a six-metre aluminium vessel – carrying three men – capsized shortly after leaving the Moruya River mouth.

Witnesses on the breakwall tossed a lifebuoy to the men, and all three were brought back to shore.

A 67-year-old man was unconscious when he was pulled from the water.

Witnesses attempted resuscitation before NSW Ambulance Paramedics arrived, however he could not be revived and died at the scene.

The other two men – aged 67 and 36 – were uninjured.

The older man, who was skippering the boat, was taken to Moruya Hospital for mandatory testing.

One local surf lifesaver described conditions at the time of the accident as “terrible”.

Another boater reportedly witnessed the accident but treacherous conditions meant they were unable to enter the river mouth to help.

Surf lifesavers were initially called to the scene but were stood down after the man was declared dead.

Officers from South Coast Police District and the Marine Area Command have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.

My husband and I witnessed the capsizing and the result was devastating with one deceased and two others injured and distressed. The whole thing was a disaster that didn’t have to happen. The bar was way to rough to be attempting to cross it.
A tragic end and so, so sad.

I saw the sea this morning pretty rough a fed of fish not worth losing your life for,I have 23years experience abalone diving industry and I wouldn’t have gone out.

This is the same sort of accident that also happened last week not one boat commercial or private has moved in narooma owing to a bad bar yet for some reason mourya is not that smart
