The new $58 million Batemans Bay aquatic and leisure centre is on track despite wet weather throughout the summer.

ADCO Constructions senior project manager Nick Lyons said the concrete bases of the 25-metre, program and leisure pools has been poured and the team is now working on the pool walls.

“On the theatre side of the building, we have completed piling, foundations and are working on inground services,” he said.

“In March, we’ll be moving to the ground slabs, and the next major milestone will be commencing the roof structure, which is scheduled to commence in May.

“The roof structure will be a combination of steel and timber so it requires a lot of planning, a lot of large deliveries and several big cranes onsite.”

Designs for the four waterslides in the aquatic centre have now been finalised. Two of the slides will land indoors and two will land outdoors.

Consultation with stakeholders and the community to name the centre took place in early February 2021.

Council said the consultations showed general support for marketing company Citizen’s approach of using one name to identify the precinct as a whole, with the aquatic and arts centres having their own names. There would also be the possibility for further naming of areas such as the theatre, meeting rooms and gallery.

Citizen presented three options for the overall precinct branding: Bay Pavilions, The Bay Pavilions and Mackay Park Pavilions.

Citizen executive director Jacqueline Morony said the name ‘pavilions’ addresses the multifunctional nature of the centre and is “aspirational and fitting for an iconic building”.

“Pavilion has been used in a contemporary context across leisure and the arts,” she said. “Examples include Bondi Pavilion and The Australian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

“The next step in the process is the refinement of the naming and marketing approach, and the development of visuals, including a logo.

“In the coming months, the community will be invited again to provide feedback on the work.”
