Police have arrested the person alleged to be the armed robber who shot a man in a NSW South Coast hotel.

NSW Police said an unknown man entered the hotel on Campbell Street in Narooma around 10:30 pm on 20 March 2026 before allegedly shooting at a 31-year-old man and stealing cash.

The intruder also allegedly threatened hotel patrons and demanded money before leaving.

He allegedly soon approached the 17-year-old driver of a Toyota LandCruiser in a carpark near the hotel, then pulled out a gun and demanded the teen get out of the vehicle.

He fled the scene in the car, which was soon found on fire on the Princes Highway in Narooma.

Meanwhile, paramedics and police had been called to the hotel and found the 31-year-old man had a gunshot wound. He was taken to Moruya Hospital in a stable condition.

“The matter was investigated by local police before it was handed over to State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad under Strike Force Cornto,” a police spokesperson said.

After extensive inquiries, tactical police officers arrested 41-year-old Deon Rodney Mason in Sunshine Bay, which is south of Batemans Bay, on Monday night (30 March).

Police also raided a home on Billaroy Road in Cobargo and seized items which are suspected of being used in the alleged robbery.

The charges for Mr Mason, who is from the Bega Valley, include two counts of robbery while armed with dangerous weapon and one count of firing a firearm in or near public place.

He faced the NSW Local Court on Tuesday (31 March) where he did not apply for bail and it was formally refused before the matter was adjourned to 25 May at the Batemans Bay Local Court.
