Bega Detectives have arrested a 19-year-old man from Bega and are expecting to lay further charges as they continue to investigate the brutal death of around 20 kangaroos in suburban Tura Beach at the weekend.

The ease in which the iconic Australian animals moves around the coastal village north of Merimbula was shattered late on Saturday night when kangaroos of various ages were run over and killed by what police have described as a heavy 4WD ute.

Police believe the callous event took place between 10:30 pm and 11:30 pm on Saturday (September 28) in and around Dress Circle and Headland Drive.

Officers from the South Coast Police District launched their investigation the following morning alerted by distressed residents. Police initially going door to door before issuing a public appeal for information.

Speaking with Region Media, Chief Inspector Peter Volf says many people came forward with information and CCTV footage to help the investigation.

“The community has played a big part in this arrest,” he says.

“Police and the community just won’t tolerate this behaviour.

“Bega Detectives do fantastic work, there’s not much that gets past them and we are very fortunate to have them working for this community.”

Chief Inspector Volf says further charges are expected to be laid.

A number of surviving joeys are being cared for by experienced wildlife carers through Far South Coast WIRES.

Living with wild animals in a suburban environment does take some awareness and patience, and while some residents are concerned at the number kangaroos in Tura Beach, most residents have condemned the behaviour on social media, appalled by the loss of life and how it was done.

The 19-year-old has been charged with serious animal cruelty offenses. He has been granted conditional bail to appear before Bega Local Court on November 26.

This senseless and cruel act of killing the Tura Beach kangaroos is only made possible by the callous attitudes, of some, towards native wildlife; in particular the kangaroos. Where I live in the Bega Valley the kangaroos are seen as pests by some farmers. As a protected species you’d expect they would enjoy some protection but the same government department that should protect them, National Parks and Wildlife, issue the permits to landholders who then cruelly and indiscriminately shoot them. For instance if you are on 500 acres, you can get a permit, over the phone, to shoot up to 50 kangaroos. And once that permit expires you can do it over and over again. So, while I believe the actions of the person charged with killing the Tura Beach kangaroos are indefensible, I ask people to look further afield and be outraged for all of the kangaroos which will be cruelly and indiscriminately shot over the coming summer. You can further vent your outrage by contacting National Parks and Wildlife in Merimbula.

Gaol time and community service for…how long kangaroos live?

He needs to be locked up for a very long time , for life would be perfect

It’s understandable that this kind of behaviour evokes anger..disbelief. As a Mental Health Professional, I would be seriously concerned about the Mental Health of someone who can carry out this kind of carnage. There is clear evidence that the killing of animals (often indiscriminate and callous) has the potential to lead to something much more serious. An act such as this clearly demonstrates a total lack of empathy for another beings life and suffering. The link between murderers/serial killers and animal cruelty is well established. Too many times we hear of cases where statements in hindsight have been…”The signs were there…we just didn’t act” !!
No I don’t agree that he should be out on bail…I feel this sends the message that “It’s not all that serious” !!
And while in custody, there is a perfect opportunity there to have a Full Mental Health Assessment !! If nothing else…ask the question…”WHY” ???

I totally agree with you, I too have a back ground working in Mental Health & have concerns that this person has been given bail to go back home & most likely not being health assessed.
The message being sent is worrying.
I believe he won’t be appearing before the courts until November, which leaves a large gap of time for another likely episode in this person’s life. It may not be Kangaroos next time.

I live in Tura & along with other residents have been affected by this trauma, people have been disturbed by this.

There is a larger picture going on with this situation which needs to be addressed.
Thankyou for bringing your valuable comments.

Agree wholeheartedly! Just read the biography of Ivan Milat: used to kill animals cruelly and ‘for sport’ when he was a youngster, a child even, in company of his brothers and mates, and see where this early behaviour led….

I just can’t fathom such behaviour; killing animals for fun is just sad and appaulling.
Just makes me feel so angry!! I really hope he gets what he deserves. Hope his name will be given.

He should have NEVER BEEN ALLOWED BAIL.

A mongrel that could do THIS CRIME, has obviously NO qualms about doing this again.

At the very least, take his car, sell it and give mobey to WIRES. take his driver’s license for ever. Fine him $10000 per animal. Put him in jail for 20 years. He MUST be made an example so we DO NOT have a repeat!!!

It’s a horrible thing, but for you to write something this extreme is absurd. Read what you wrote and tell me your not kidding. Giving a teen 20 years, fining him $10000 an animal, selling his car. You have no idea.

He should not be on bail!
Lock him up for 10years minimum

And what is our justice system going to do in regards to this sickening act ?
Young punk should be made to stand out on the road in front of all local residents so they can do the same to him !

What a mongrel act. Great community policing.

He should not be allowed bail.
Unbelievably cruel!!

Shouldn’t Be allowed to post bail at all….he’s a criminal 😡

Gaol the barstard.
